The Cannon
This monument located in the southern part of Primorsky Boulevard near the City Council is called simply «The Cannon». This unusual monument — a cannon on a wooden gun carriage — is a battle trophy of the Crimean War of 1854. Its weight is 250 poods and the weight of the shell — 2 poods 16 pounds. It was dismounted from the British frigate «Tiger» that took part in the city during the Crimean War.
In 1904 the cannon was mounted on a granite pedestal to mark the 50th anniversary of the defense of Odessa during the Crimean War.
There is an old saying about this military monument. An innocence test. If a potential bridegroom was eager to know whether his potential bride was a virgin, he had to bring her to the gun. If the gun fires a shot, than her innocence was guaranteed.
