The Odessa period of Pushkin's art was a fruitful one. During 13 months of his staying here (from 03.07.1823 to 01.08.1824) the great poet begun to work under «Tzigans» poem, wrote «The fountain of Bakhchisaray» and two chapters of «Eugene Onegin» novel. The Odessits honored the memory of the talented artist; now one of the main street of the city is named after Alexander Pushkin. The monument to Alexander Pushkin, located just opposite the City Council. It was sculpted by Janna Polonskaya and the architect A.Vasilyev. Polonskaya's sculpture is a very close likeness of Pushkin. The monument was finished in 1888, a year after the 50th anniversary of the poet's death and was unveiled in 1889.
A granite pedestal is given the form of a truncated pyramid edges. Water jetting from the fishes« mouths flows down into the shell-shaped bowls of iron placed on the granite base. It has the inscription: »To A.S.Pushkin, from the citizens of Odessa«. On the other side of the monument is the date 1888, the date of the monuments unveiling.
Although Pushkin only spent 13 months in Odessa, the amount of magnification of his holy name in this city would make you think he lived his whole life here.
